Bobby Sews a Seed

Bobby learned about plants. Seeds, soil, water, and sun.

Bobby found a seed. He dug up dirt. He put the dirt in a cup and the seed in the dirt. He put the cup under the faucet. He put the cup by a window.

The seed was going to be his own tree. He was going to put it in his yard. In the back. It was going to be the biggest around and he could live in it someday soon.

On Monday, just dirt.

On Tuesday, just dirt.

On Wednesday, just dirt. Maybe the seed was thirsty. He put the cup under the faucet and gave it a drink. He put the cup by a window.

On Thursday, just wet dirt.

On Friday, still just dirt. He asked his mom what was wrong. She said probably nothing. She said give it time. These things take time. But he wanted his tree now.

On Saturday, he did not check. He played with his friends. He ate dinner at Grandma's. He watched a movie about cars.

On Sunday, he remembered his tree-to-be. He looked in the cup. In the middle stood a little white string with a little green thing on top. It was curvy. This was a going to be a tree? Bobby was happy because it was growing but sad because it was so slow. Maybe it was thirsty. He put the cup under the faucet and gave it a drink. He put the cup by a window.

On Monday, it wasn't any taller. Maybe it was hungry. He put more dirt on top to give it food. He put the cup by a window.

On Tuesday, just dirt. Maybe it needed more sun. But how? He put the cup outside on a railing.

On Wednesday, the cup was gone. It had fallen. He looked on the ground. Dirt was on the sidewalk but no cup. He looked close at the dirt. The seed was in there. The white-green string was coming out the side of it. The string was short and curved. The top was not so green. Bobby was upset. Plants are dumb. He kicked the dirt into the grass.
